Ohio Dentist Installed as AGD’s New President

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) recently installed Ohio dentist Hans Guter, DDS, FAGD, as its new president during its Annual Meeting in Chicago. Guter has been a member of the AGD since 1991. As the new AGD president, Guter is committed to advancing AGD’s goals of delivering exceptional education, advocating for the profession and providing tools to help general dentists in their practices.

“The life of the general dentist is challenging but it can be enhanced with the support of a network of colleagues who share your commitment to oral health, practice management and lifelong learning”, says Guter. ” We are consistently evaluating and adjusting AGD’s offering to better meet member needs with programs that will improve their personal and professional lives.”

During his tenure as an AGD member, Guter has served in many leadership roles. Most recently, he has served as AGD president-elect and now begins his one-year term as president.

Guter has been active in organized dentistry since he opened his practice. He started his service with the AGD at the Ohio AGD, serving as Membership chair for four years, Mastership chair for 12 years, and ultimately serving as president for two years. He has served as an alternate delegate and delegate for his region since 1997. His service continued nationally, serving two terms as an AGD regional director, and served two terms as an AGD trustee. He has served on numerous councils and task forces, including the Leadership Development Symposium, PACE Council, Scientific Meeting Council and the Dental Student Task Force.

Guter graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1989. He received his BS in microbiology from Ohio State and, after dental school, completed his advanced education in general dentistry residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He has maintained a private practice in Circleville, Ohio, since 1990. He has fellowships from the AGD, Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American College of Dentistry, the Academy of Dentistry International and the International College of Dentistry.

Guter has also been an active leader within the American Dental Association (ADA) on all three levels. He has served as president of his component dental society from 2003 to present. He is also the continuing education chair for his component and has served as its peer review chair since 2008. On a state level, he has served as an alternate delegate and delegate since 1994 and served on the Council on Access to Care and Public Service (chair), Council on Membership Services (chair), Council on Dental Specialty Groups, Strategic Planning Committee, ODPAC Board and the ADA Leadership Nomination Committee.

Guter is involved locally in his community with the Knights of Columbus and Rotary Club. He has also been instrumental as the Give Kids a Smile chairman for his county. He and his wife, Kathy, have three children. In his spare time, Guter enjoys triathlons, golfing and riding his Harley Davidson.
