Man detained after barricading himself in Wilton Manors business

WILTON MANORS — A standoff between authorities and a man who barricaded himself inside of a Wilton Manors dentist office ended late Thursday with the man detained by police.

The ordeal began before 3 p.m. Thursday and continued late into the night, with several roads in the area shut down and residents asked to ‘shelter in place’ until Wilton Manors police tweeted an all clear at 11:18 p.m.

Sgt. Michael Littleton, a spokesperson for Wilton Manors Police, said the man entered Wilton Manors Dental at 2517 NE Ninth Ave. shortly after 3 p.m. with an “unknown device” and made an “unknown threat.” Nearby businesses and homes were evacuated.

Officer Haley Halverson, a spokesperson for the police department, said that people were asked to avoid Northeast Ninth Avenue, Wilton Drive and parts of Northeast 26th Street while the negotiations continued.

Fort Lauderdale Police Department SWAT assisted Wilton Manors Police in cordoning off the area, Littleton said, and attempted to make contact with the man inside the business.

A video posted on Twitter by a WPLG-Ch.10 reporter Thursday night showed a man with gray hair tied in a bun wearing dark sunglasses, a dark suit jacket, a white shirt and black tie hanging several pieces of paper with notes written on them against a glass door.
