IT’S ALMOST time for trick or treating, and we bet you’ll have loads of sweets to go through once the night has finished.
But dentists have revealed the six worst Halloween sweets for your teeth and why it’s actually better to have them all in one sitting rather than spaced out.
Dr. Hajera Ali, a general dentist at Smile! Dental Boutique, revealed to Insider that gummies were the worst sweet to eat.
He added: “It sticks to your teeth and has to be chewed much more than other candy.
“The sugar is in contact with your teeth for a longer period of time, and sometimes it sticks in hard-to-clean areas like between your teeth.”
Next up is caramels or soft toffee as they take a long time to dissolve.
Dr. Joyce Kahng, cosmetic dentist and assistant professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC said they stick to your teeth for a long time.
And it’s bad news if you like chewy sweets like Starbursts says Kahng.
“These act like little sugar bombs that hang out in the hard to reach crevices of your teeth until they finally dissolve,” he added.
On top of that, they can be har don crowns and fillings as they stick to them and pull at them.
Lollipops are also a big problem for your knashers as they take a long time to eat.
This means your mouth is in an acidic state for longer – which can damage the teeth.
Sour candies and powders are also very acidic which is bad news as you want the PH balance of your mouth to stay neutral.
Dr. Aaleeyah Alim, a Chicago-based dentist, told Insider. “For reference: water, which is neutral, has a pH of seven and battery acid has a pH of one.
“Your teeth start to decalcify, or break down, at a pH of four. Some of the worst candy for your teeth is Wonka Fun Dip, Pixy Stix powder, and Now and Laters. The pH of those are all below two!”
You may have thought sugar-free sweets were better but they can be just as damaging.
They often use citric acid rather than sugar – which can damage the enamel just as much.
Alim revealed you can of course enjoy sweets – but recommends eating candy in one sitting rather than nibbling at it throughout the day.
He also suggested swishing your mouth with water afterward.
